Academic Terminologies
The following terms are defined at MBMU for all academic education activities including curriculum development, instructional unit / credit, class session, school term / semester, etc. These definitions are made based on most commonly used terms in higher education institutions / universities in the United States with some appropriate modifications in order to accommodate the needs of MBMU's education principles and natures.
1. Semester Unit
A semester unit (or credit) is an academic unit earned for fifteen (15) 60-minute sessions of instruction with a normal expectation of two (2) hours of self study for each class session. Typically, a three-semester unit course meets three (3) 60-minute sessions per week for fifteen (15) weeks for a total of 45 instruction sessions.
1 Semester Unit = 15 weeks x (1 hour Class Session + 2 hours outside class study)
3 Semester Unit = 15 weeks x 3 x (1 hour Class Session + 2 hours outside class study)
Note: Based on MBMU's education principles, many courses were designed
with higher ratio of self-study hours vs instruction hours,
emphasizing student's active learning, creative practice, internal
cultivation, deeper knowledge digestion, inspiring understanding, and practical
application. The standard ratio of self study hours vs instruction hours is 2/1, but for many courses the ratio is given as 3/1. As result, the instruction hours reduced, and self study hours increased, while total instruction plus self study time remains no change.
2. Class Session
Each instructional class session is performed 60 minutes long including first 5 minutes of meditation allowing students and instructor to calm, focus and energize the minds and get ready for the class, and another 5 minutes meditation inserted somewhere in the middle of the class session to rest the mind, recharge energy, refresh memory, and better digest the earning contents, helping students and teacher remain energetic state and never get tired. Note most universities use 50 minutes as one class session, but in MBMU two 5 minutes are added in each class.
